Prepare to be elsewhere! Yacht rock is a term used to describe a lot of soft rock with jazz, soul, and disco stylings. It can be hard to define. But, what is even harder to define is this album. You may have encountered it without noticing during the fever dream of 2020. "Crystal Dolphin" with its manic vocal stylings graced many a short video. It lead to me to this great album. Maybe within a larger space of Vaporwave and futurefunk; This album aims for a very specific aesthetic and concept. It is overwhelmingly nautical and rich times on a yacht. I can't help but think of all the yachts in film with the glamour cruising lifestyle. There is a lot to like here. Music like this reminds me why we use music to illustrate feelings or concepts. I simply cannot describe the feelings of this album without a mountain of words and imagery.
There isn't a ton to talk about in the music. It employs heavy sampling with cuts and chops. Then beats and unique tracking around them transform each song into a blend of nostalgia and fresh hot beats. I think it largely speaks for itself. But I will say that the overall mix of disco-dance, softrock, Jazz, Hip-hop, and soul make it an absolute banger. If you've been searching for a heavy dose of endless saxophone, as abused in the 80's, or gloriously exaggerated horn and string pieces this is the place to be.
This is a place to get lost in. The album is only 33 minutes long, but feels like a whole space and existence. This is some of the best music to come out of what I would call 'Aestheticwave.' It holds the idealized concept of yacht rock and the odd high society nautical themes in a stranglehold. It employs plunderphonics and sampling in a tasteful and masterful manner. This is another great entry point into this type of music. It might even encourage you to check out original funk, soul, or yacht rock. In that case I think it would be doing its job.
