Vaporwave is odd. But, in general much of the music in the space characterizes my feelings about electronic music. Electronic is a broad term. There are a million niches. Techno, Breakcore, the various 'waves,' and more. I have realized that much of it is seared into my mind by video games and cinema from my childhood. So that it is present and nostalgiac in ways I cannot really express beyond abstract ideas or feelings. Take, for example, something like the music from Lego Island. That is the feeling and context in which Vaporwave seems to make sense to me. But, everyone has different experiences and rememberances that live in this space. Lending itself to a very broad genre. Windows96 was the first producer I really dove into in the genre. Starting with One Hundred Mornings actually. I find Gradient Horizont maybe more digestable as an entry point. Once you get a taste you might find yourself drowning in the outrageous diversity of electronic production. From plunderphonics and sampling to intriguing new ways of making noise. Maybe you'll find something new to feel.
The way we start is with with texture, steady rhythm, and vaguely familiar melodies. "Youthful Waters" has a lot going for it. You can kind of get lost in it. The way it pushes to distortion and many sounds come across distant or deteriorated. It is something that colours the album in a way. Sometimes it bounces up into an almost dance level of jam like in "Transient Feeling," But largely strattles the transitory space between. Some of the tracks feel like daylight as in "Vision" and others really pull me into late night vibes like "Origami." A song that is a particular favoite of mine. There is also dramatic sense in "Motion" and "Near Past." We close off the album with "Last Station" which really does feel like the last song on a lost radio station or maybe the sound as you stand alone in an empty metro station. Either way, it feels like the end of something. The sounds and production of this album are very full. Things pan and move well. Synths, drums, and anything else that passes as instrumentation are full and rich.
It is hard to know what someone will take away from an album like this. Instrumental albums are already something not everyone enjoys. Then pair that with a sense of implied nostalgia that they are fishing for. They can fade into the background, but they can also demand attention. Personally I find that music like this pushed me to explore what I like in all music more. I had to explore the feelings it dredged up. See where they come from. Where does nostalgia live? Why does it come here? Those are usually answered in ways you won't expect or quite remember like you think. I'm not sure what your initial reaction to this kind of music might be. But, I want you to ask yourself an important question. Can you feel it?
