Some albums feel a place. Like sitting in a small hall. You can smell the place. Feel the chairs put out for the show. See the people. Standing, sitting, and swaying around the edges. I cannot pin down why. This album by Soliterre (AKA Wazonek) puts me in that place. I appreciate it. I appreciate the way I am shifted in place. Maybe in a hall, maybe a car on a warm summer night with the windows down. The lush sound of this is complimented by a groove that can set your spirit in motion.
You'll find full tracks here. Think 80's pop and dance. Lots of synth. Guitars with lots of flanging and phasing. Trumpets. Saxophones. Phat bass. Stellar drums. It has to be experienced really. "Meet Me In A Dream" is a song about a lost love. Out and gone, but not lost from dreams. The saxophone and drums stand out to me on this track. "Scenes From a Summer Funeral" is a gorgeous song. The piano just so. The driving of the drum track provides an intriguing tick-tock. It rolls into a spectacular instrumental break before finishing. "Handsome Man" is this fabulous track. Staring at someone far too lovely for you. The instrumentation on it is full of feeling and comes across like a song one might play for a slow dance. "Two Ships in The Night" has a big sound. Strings. Saxophone. Trumpet. Big synth sounds. Altogether you will find these tracks lacking in nothing. They give you space to breath in the song in strange ways.
For me this is a comforting and inviting album. It transports me. Covers me in feelings and sounds. I enjoy how it draws back to 80's styling. I feel elements of Peter Gabriel. But, I also see how it has been mashed into elements of folk, dance, and more. It holds comparisons in the best kind of ways. That it has taken them into consideration and yet done something real. Friends I hope this album can enrapture you as it has me. If it doesn't, well, perhaps you might yet meet me in a dream.
