Joey Dosik has appeared in my recommendations before. I first found them listed as a player and singer on the Vulfpeck track "Running Away." His smooth voice was striking and lovely. I had already made it a habit at that point to look up anyone appearing on a Vulf album. That ldt me to this gentle, jazzy, wholesome, and emotionally devastating album. It is soulful. It is playful. It feels honest.
I would describe the tracks as soul with helpings of jazz, funk, and just a hair of pop. "Inside Voice" Is a powerful track and sets the tone for the album right away. Full of soaring violins and rich bass. "Take Mine" is a piano driven song that never fails to ruin me. It feels and sounds like an outstretched hand and offer of love. Complete with chirping birds and Dosik's soothing voice. 'Past the Point" is a fun song about love lost and regrets. "Grandma Song" is a gorgeous compositiion and reflection on the little things of our elders. "Don't Want it To Be Over" is the poppiest song on the album and I love it. It is strained love and mutual concern. It sells itself with great music and fantastic duet lyrics. "Emergency Landing" is the moment lived. That place you plan for but can never really be ready for until you are there. "In Heaven" is a bouncy and fun piece. The depth of this album is truly astonishing. I am uplifted, moved, and potentially crying when I hear these songs. A decidedly modern and yet faiithful soul album. It knows when to use tried and true or go with something new.
I feel as at home in this album crying as I do dancing. That is a testament to how welll it stirs the emotions. How great the groove is. How tangible the lyrics are. Dosik's voice is truly amazing throughout and I find it the element that ties everying together. This album has a depth and range that give it real staying power in my life. I was listening when it first released and it has made it into playlists or picked whimsically for a listen ever since. Let Joey Dosik use his Inside Voice on you. Soothe your soul. Let it all flow.
