I was introduced to Colony House by my roommate in college. When I popped it on for this week's listen I was happy to find that this is as good an album as my fond memories indicated. In many ways this album feels very period correct as an indie-rock album from 2014. It instantly reminds me of the other artists and songs that surrounded me at that time. That said, it doesn't feel dated or poorly aged at all. The band itself is notable and familiar maybe to fans of Steven Curtis Chapman; a pretty big name in contemporary Christian music. Half of the band, Will & Caleb Chapman, carry on their father's great skill in music. What you will find here is nothing less than great musicians making great music.
This album is a guitar driven and drum infused reminder of the reason the four piece rock band has remained relevant. In looking for the tracks I wanted to discuss I found they all called to me in some manner. They all felt so good. Their lyrics rang so poignant in my mind. "Silhouettes" is such a powerful opening to the album. "Second Guessing Games" has a lovely message. "Roll With The Punches" is a fun piece with a little bit of poppy zest in it. "2:20" is a rockin piece that provides a full track of the harder edged playing that shows up intermittently on other tracks. "Learning How To Love" is a personal favorite for its lovely sentiment. It has this yearning in the lyrics and a somewhat distant and reverb filled instrumental. "Won't Give Up" features a great build from acoustic to full track complete with lovely orchestral accents and heartfelt lyrics. "Glorious" has this pounding forward motion and strikingly beautiful lines. "I'm so tired of living like I don't have what it takes... I'm still waiting for the day where I'm more than mistakes." All this is to say that every single track is fun, thoughtful, powerful, and masterfully well performed.
Coming back to an album you love is a beautiful feeling when it is as good as you remember. I remember thinking that this album felt so current and fresh. It was fun and modern. I loved how meaningful and listenable the songs were. I remember playing games, writing papers, and sharing good company with friends. I admit that it is tinged with nostalgia because of these things. However, I hope that you can find the joy and jams in how good of an album this is. I hope that you can reflect on when YOU were younger. I hope you can see how we are all still learning how to love.
