What's the Vibe? Drinking Coffee and staring out a window at the fall, reflecting, feeling
I'm not entirely sure how this album appeared on my radar. Well. That's not entirely true; the algorithm slid it into my music front page. I don't exactly click on everything that appears there though. I think this speaks to the album artwork; which I think feels iconic. The music also feels about as smooth as the velvet dress on that cover. Soccer Mommy (AKA Sophie Regina Allison) has a few albums and I quite like them all. There is something nostalgiac, rear-view staring, and fall-reflecting to the sound. I am reminded of Phoebe Bridgers and maybe Julien Baker to an extent. There is pop influence and there is punky rock influence.
The sound of this album is a lot of warm electric guitar, synth accents, and close-sung lyrics. "Allison" Is a great opener from first strum and first word. "Allison lay down your sword. Give up you're fighting for" is a lyric that rings in my head. "Death By Chocolate" is sung about someone who "Smells like cigarettes and how chocolate tastes" which is strangely vivid. It sings like the kind of young infatuation with someone that is a little overly intense. I love the singing intensity of "Out Worn" although maybe I appreciate that it is a little more easy for my brain to pick up the lyrics. Maybe my only criticism of the album is that the lyrics tend to blur into the song. This is mostly just the vibe, but I noticed it on closer re-listens. It is probably the most up-beat of the tracks. "Waiting for Cars" Is this intense track. The fingerpicking on guitar is just fantastic. The lyrics are sad and reflective. Altogether a great ending to a set of songs with a lot of big emotions.
It is hard to know how to feel about this album. I think that is okay. The songs themselves describe past events in ways that I think many of us have. The way those old feelings feel can be hard to understand. This is maybe a gateway into reflection and feeling out the things in your life or to live vicariously the intense feelings of another. It feels appropriate that the tracks are very full and rich. Filling your ears like feelings fill your body. I'd say give this album and the rest of the discography a listen. There is certainly something here.
