Theo Katzman is someone I have mentioned before and might be familiar to those who are fans of Vulfpeck. In fact, Katzman has his fingerprints on much of Vulfpeck's sound. His distinctice voice, drumming, guitar strumming, bass thumbin', and piano playing are all present. So in some ways you could expect a similar quality and playing on this album. But, the genre is a bit different. Rather than the funk of Vulfpeck this veers toward indie-pop and rock sentiments.
I find this to be a tight album with some really great post-breakup kinda songs. "Break up Together" is this lovely piece about breaking up and that being the end of your shared experiences. I love the way the drums roll along in it as well as the little harmonized parts that seem to reinforce the sentiment of it being a joint effort. "Good to Be Alone" is a beautiful song. With mournful slide guitar and gorgeous chords it invites you into acceptance. That it can be good to be alone even if there are things that will be missed. It is as much denial as it is acceptance. I love the conflicted feelings of the song and it really fits onto this album conceptually. "Love is A Beautiful Thing" is a song that also appears on Vulfpeck's Hill Climber (although in a much different form.) It is a sad tale about watching someone you might have loved love and be loved by someone else. It continues the low and reflective vibes of the album. Those are contrasted in lovely fashion by the harder edged songs like "Hard Work", "Lost and Found" or "As The Romans Do" as well as the boppin bonus track "Pop Song". On those you find the other side of Katzman with wailing guitar and intensly sung lyrics. It's worth mentioning that much of the instrumentation on this album is done by Katzman.
This is a fantastic album. No weak tracks, gread head swinging music. It is indeed a classic breakup album, but it is better than that. It is about heartbreak. It's not so vengeful or upset about breaking up or being broken up with. It is just living in that moment and sentiment of heartbreak. It is sad, but hopeful. Mournful, but full of potential joy. Angry and happy. It swings from being overwhelmed to losing yourself in having had the experience at all. For this I think it accomplishes its title. It plays the hits of love and loss in an intimate and real way. Katzman has other fantastic music and shows up in collaboration with many other artists. You can't go wrong with that music or with tracking him as he appears on other artist's music but, I would offer this for your consideration.
