I have a hard time recalling when I first heard the music of Gregory And The Hawk (A.K.A. Meredith Godreau). What I remember and recall vividly is the impact that it had. The music stood out from the crowd with a distinctive sound and striking lyrics. I have a strong memory of just sitting and listening to the album as a singular task upon finding it. Something here demanded my attention.
I think this is powerful music that speaks aloud about its own quality and significance. The basic composition of the tracks is a guitar and a voice. Covered over with various percussion and accompaniment. That voice. Thin and piercing, but clear and distinct. Speaking anywhere from clear and simple prose to vague and poetic verses. I enjoy how many of the songs start out low and simple. Then build. Often they end by outroing into a cacaphony of absolutely beautiful sound. And again the way their voice cuts through the mix is a testament to the mixing engineer. Even when there are heavy drums, horns, guitar, and more they always seem to shine. There is also basically any instrument that seems to fit the song. Choosing electric guitar where appropriate and even incorporating drum machine rhythms. I would talk about more particular songs here, but I think they are all incredibly consistent in their artistic direction. It speaks to a strong process and quality musicianship.
I have deeply enjoyed my encounter with this album and the rest of Gregory And The Hawk's music. It carrys a very different vibe from a lot of music I hear. I hope you might also enjoy getting lost in the sounds here.
