If you think you don't know any songs by Tom Petty you are probably mistaken. Tom Petty is everyone's rocker. The songs he wrote capture the nostalgia of youthful days. Petty sings loud the lyrics that are at once both deep reflections of his soul and somehow also about any person that hears them. Add the incredible musical talents of the Heartbreakers and you have a recipe that simply cannot fail. That is maybe most evident on this album. These things come together to form an album of pure and coherent rock & roll.
Every track here is incredible. It's southern rock at it's finest. There is overdriven guitar, pounding drums, twangy licks, and the unmistakeable drawl of Petty's voice. Let's hit on some of the high points for me. The album starts off on a high note with Refugee. A song about a hurt person. Someone who has been hurt and the message here is that they don't have to live in that trauma. We then drop into Even the Losers. An absolute anthem for anyone that has ever lost or felt like they could just never get a win. Did I mention that the organ playing of Benmont Tench on this album is amazing and It changed the way that I looked at the instrument? Don't forget Don't Do Me Like That on this album. Truly a rock song for the ages about love and its consequences. A truly 'It's complicated' kind of song. Finally you cap off the album with Louisiana Rain. Just to remind you that this is rock in a decidedly southern flavour. If the twanging guitar and piping organ don't hit you in the heart then I truly believe the singing will. It is hard to sing the praises of these tracks enough. I genuinely feel this is an album of 10/10 songs from top to bottom.
Tom Petty has had a profound impact on my music. Both the music that I play and the music that I listen to. If you have never experienced this album or any other of Petty's work then you are missing out on some of the best music ever written. It is challenging to put into words exactly what makes this such a special album. It is just GOOD. It sounds amazing coursing through a cars speakers, but it also has just as much impact while sitting on a couch and melting in the summer heat. This album is a great place to start. If you like this then I have good news. There are even more tracks on the deluxe edition (that actually fit into the album and are equally good I might add). Then there is the rest of the discography to discover. I promise Tom Petty is worth every second of your time.
