I stumbled onto this album because of Vulfpeck. You might notice that half of this duo (Woody Goss) I noted when I talked Vulfpeck last week. Woody teams up with Jeremy Daly to produce a collection of wildly fantastic instrumentals with lyrics that might make you crack a good smile. If you listen carefully you might also see the fingerprints of the Vulfpeck greater community as well. All of this comes together to create a fun, funky, and fresh album.
The songs are all a little absurd. On the first couple playthroughs I found a lot of laughs and had a lot of 'what even is this?' moments. The lyrics range from nonsensical whimsy to maybe overly relateable nonsense. Even the tone of some of the organ sounds or the way the bass pumps can feel silly and uplifting. Honestly I'm tempted not to talk much about individual tracks and their topics or feelings. It feels like a ton of thoughts and feelings run through each song. There's 'Hollywood Witches' or 'Green Dress' with a particular topic. Then there is something like 'Work Together' which feels more like a stream of consciousness or narration of a day. There is something about each song though. They work deep into your head and seem to stay there. It doesn't even really matter if you remember which song a line is from because its just from this collection of little golden poetic nonsense that comprises the whole album. There really are two halves of these songs that are necessary to elevate each other. The lyrics on their own would be odd. In a lot of musical styles I don't think they would work. Then there is the music. On it's own It would be good and enjoyable funk, but paired with Jeremy's voice howling these lyrics it becomes incredible. As a whole I think that these tracks are best described as forming a very coherent album. They do stand up individually, but this is just so much better as an album.
Maybe this isn't your kind of album, but maybe it will grow on you like it has on me. I've found it in my rotation of hot day songs and it never fails to bring a smile to my face. The thing that I think really sells me on this album is the sheer quality. The music is tight and well mixed. The lyrics (as strange as they are) are well written and flow in a way that jives well inside the instrumentals. Even Jeremy's somewhat scuffed singing feels very in place. I think the album title really does capture the feeling I get after listening. It's certainly strange, but I always leave satisfied.
