I'm often reminded that even a band with a pretty large following and good popularity can slip past people. That's why I want to talk about this 2017 album. Vulfpeck is headed by Jack Stratton and features a host of incredible musicians. Cory Wong, Theo Katzman, Joey Dosik, Woody Goss, Joe Dart, and so many more can be found featured or playing in the background of Vulfpeck's signature music videos. Together they bring together myriad styles and instrumentation into some of the tastiest and enjoyable music out there.
So what is there to these songs and this album? After all they have quite a few. I enjoy the mix here of quiet (Birds of a Feather, Running Away, & Grandma), Upbeat (Mr Finish Line and Business Casual), Funky fun instrumental (Tee Time, Hero Town, and Vulf Pack), and just wacky (Captain Hook). The songs meant to be filled with feeling and sentiment are lovely. I then turn around and dare you not to groove or dance to the upbeat songs.
I think I choose this album out of their discography because it feels so accesssible. Often I encourage people to explore Vulfpeck more as a singles and hits type band first (As many of us did through their original videos) and then explore the deeper cuts. Some of their best songs are on other records that are less coherent as a whole. As far as their albums go I think this is a great place to start.
Please while you are at it. Look into some of the names that pop up in the Vulfpeck roster. There is a ton of great music to be found in this community.
